The Beginner’s Guide to Overdiagnosis

A 3-hour pre-PODC introductory seminar

9:00 - 12:00, 4th December, Abercrombie Building, University of Sydney

Do you feel tired in the morning? You might suffer from low testosterone syndrome!

Is your child very active? It could be ADHD!

A cyst was incidentally found in the liver – is it serious?

Or - is it all just overdiagnosis causing you unnecessary harm?

Find out more by joining this 3-hour introductory seminar on December 4th, 2019 (9am - 12pm) at the University of Sydney, the day before the Preventing Overdiagnosis Conference (5th - 7th of December).

The seminar is hosted by the Junior Researcher Group in Preventing Overdiagnosis and aims to give a broad introduction to overdiagnosis for those new to the concept.

The seminar is FREE for anyone interested in overdiagnosis and will cover 3 broad topics:

  1. 1. Definitions of overdiagnosis
  2. 2. Overdiagnosis in cancer screening programmes
  3. 3. Expanding disease definitions, indication creep and overtreatment

These topics will be followed by an informal discussion on how to communicate overdiagnosis, drivers of overdiagnosis and potential solutions to prevent it.

Please click on the link below to register so we can ensure there are enough seats for everyone! We will be in contact closer to the date with the location and to confirm attendance.

The Student Challenge – pitch your solution to the problem of overdiagnosis!

Following directly on from The Beginner’s Guide to Overdiagnosis, all students have the opportunity to participate in a workshop entitled ‘The Student Challenge’, run by the local organising committee of the Preventing Overdiagnosis conference from 1pm.

This workshop aims to engage students new to the topic to think critically about the problem, players, and challenges of overdiagnosis, and develop an elevator pitch to communicate possible solutions. Five students will be offered FREE registration to attend Preventing Overdiagnosis 2019 and will be given the opportunity to present their pitch at the conference.
